CBI seeks sanction to prosecute Karnataka Minister B. Nagendra in ₹89.63 crore scam
The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has sought sanction from Karnataka Governor Thaawarchand Gehlot to prosecute Planning and Statistics Minister B. Nagendra in connection with the alleged embezzlement of ₹89.63 crore from the Karnataka Maharshi Valmiki Scheduled Tribes Development Corporation. Multiple sources confirmed that the request has been received at Raj Bhavan, though the Governor has not yet taken a decision on the matter.
The development comes amid continued protests by opposition parties in the Karnataka Legislative Assembly, which have been disrupted for the fifth consecutive day. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Janata Dal (Secular) have been demanding the removal of Mr. Nagendra from the state Cabinet following allegations of financial irregularities at the corporation.
According to officials, the alleged embezzlement involved transfer of funds from the corporation to multiple bank accounts. Of the total amount, approximately ₹79 crore has been recovered so far. The CBI has already filed chargesheets in three First Information Reports (FIRs) in which Mr. Nagendra's name figures, after taking over the investigation from the state police.
Mr. Nagendra, who represents the Congress party, has not yet made a public statement regarding the CBI's sanction request. He was previously probed by the CBI in connection with illegal iron ore mining cases in Ballari district. The current matter pertains to alleged misuse of funds meant for welfare schemes of Scheduled Tribes.
The sanction for prosecution is a constitutional requirement under the Prevention of Corruption Act, as the minister is a public servant. The Governor's decision is awaited, and legal experts say the process involves careful examination of the evidence presented by the investigating agency.
The continued legislative impasse has stalled the assembly's proceedings, with opposition members pressing for the minister's resignation. The ruling Congress government has maintained that it will wait for the due process of law to take its course. Political analysts note that the case could have significant implications for the state government, which is already facing challenges on multiple fronts.
The Valmiki Corporation, established for the welfare of Scheduled Tribes, is one of several state-run bodies under scrutiny in recent months. The CBI's probe is part of a broader investigation into alleged financial mismanagement across various government agencies in Karnataka.
As the matter unfolds, the focus remains on the legal process. The Governor's office has not indicated a timeline for a decision, and the CBI is expected to follow up on its request. The opposition has vowed to continue its agitation in the assembly until Mr. Nagendra is removed from the ministry.
