CBI brings back Red Notice fugitive Vishakha Rathod from UAE in major fraud case

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Monday, August 3, 2026, successfully secured the deportation of Vishakha Rathod, a fugitive wanted in a large-scale financial fraud case, from the United Arab Emirates (UAE) to India. Rathod landed in Pune and was immediately taken into custody by a team of the Maharashtra Police.

Rathod is wanted in connection with a criminal conspiracy involving several associates, where she allegedly induced clients to invest in various schemes by promising guaranteed 'fixed monthly returns'. According to the CBI, she misappropriated the funds by diverting money through multiple bank accounts and demat accounts, causing significant financial losses to investors.

The case against Rathod began when complaints were filed by victims who claimed they were lured with the promise of high, risk-free returns. Investigations revealed a pattern of fraudulent activities, leading the CBI to register a case. Based on the evidence, INTERPOL issued a Red Notice against Rathod, which is a global alert to law enforcement agencies to locate and provisionally arrest a person pending extradition, surrender, or similar legal action.

The deportation from the UAE was the result of coordinated efforts between Indian authorities and the UAE government. While extradition involves a formal legal process based on treaties, deportation is an administrative act by the host country. In this case, the UAE authorities agreed to deport Rathod, which facilitates her return without the lengthy extradition proceedings. This reflects the growing cooperation between India and the UAE in combating cross-border crime.

Upon her arrival in Pune, Rathod was handed over to the Maharashtra Police, who will produce her before the competent court. She will face charges under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code and other financial laws. The CBI has stated that further investigation is underway to trace all co-accused and recover the misappropriated funds.

Legal experts note that the successful deportation of a Red Notice fugitive is a significant achievement for Indian investigative agencies, as it demonstrates the effectiveness of international cooperation in law enforcement. However, they also caution that the legal process must proceed with full respect for the rights of the accused, ensuring a fair trial as guaranteed under the Constitution of India.

This case highlights the need for due diligence by investors and the importance of regulatory oversight in financial markets. Authorities urge the public to verify the credentials of entities offering investment schemes and to report any suspicious activities to the police or the CBI.

The CBI has not released further details about the quantum of money involved or the number of victims at this stage. More information is expected as the investigation progresses and the court proceedings commence.
