CBDT Chairman Ravi Agrawal Gets Six-Month Tenure Extension
The Union government has extended the tenure of Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) Chairman Ravi Agrawal by six months, until December 2026. The decision was announced on Tuesday, June 30, 2026, the day Mr. Agrawal was originally scheduled to retire.
Mr. Agrawal, a 1988-batch Indian Revenue Service (IRS) officer, will now serve as Chairman of the CBDT on a contract basis for six months starting July 1, 2026, or until further orders, whichever is earlier. The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) stated that the reappointment has been made in relaxation of the Recruitment Rules, on terms and conditions applicable to re-employed central government officers.
The CBDT is the apex statutory authority responsible for administering direct taxes in India, including income tax and corporate tax. The extension is expected to provide continuity in the board's leadership during a period of ongoing tax policy reforms and digitalisation efforts.
