CAZRI's Research Cultivates New Growth in Rajasthan's Arid Lands
The Central Arid Zone Research Institute (CAZRI) is playing a pivotal role in transforming Rajasthan's desert landscape into a source of economic opportunity for farmers. During a recent media visit by journalists from Andhra Pradesh, CAZRI Director Dr. Suresh Pal Singh Tanwar highlighted how the institute's research has expanded irrigated agriculture, strengthened allied sectors, and improved rural livelihoods.
Established in its current form in 1959, CAZRI has long been at the forefront of helping farmers adapt to some of India's harshest climatic conditions. With a focus on sustainable farming, the institute develops technologies that boost farm incomes while conserving scarce water and natural resources.
Dr. Tanwar explained that CAZRI's work spans crop and grass seed production, nurseries, post-harvest technologies, and sustainable farming systems. The institute has also pioneered roof-water harvesting, alternative fodder resources, and agri-voltaic systems, which enable farmers to generate solar power without giving up agricultural activity.
Agroforestry species such as ber, amla, and khejri have emerged as valuable options for farmers in the desert region. According to Dr. Tanwar, CAZRI earns approximately ₹40 lakh annually from sapling sales, a clear sign of the growing demand for these plantation species.
The institute's research on arid legumes has had a wider economic impact. Improved varieties of moth bean, moong, and clusterbean have not only supported cultivation in dry areas but also supplied raw materials to food-processing industries. Notably, CAZRI-developed moth bean has become a key ingredient in India's thriving snack industry.
To sustain Rajasthan's livestock-based rural economy, researchers have promoted alternative fodder crops such as Napier bajra, spineless cactus, and moringa. Some of these crops are now finding premium markets, with cactus and moringa products fetching high prices.
CAZRI's research portfolio also includes climate-resilient farming, desertification control, and livestock productivity enhancement. The institute has developed technologies for stabilising sand dunes and improving overall arid-land productivity, which are crucial for the region's ecological and economic resilience.
The visiting media team interacted with CAZRI scientists, including Dr. P.C. Maharana (Project Monitoring and Evaluation head), Dr. R.N. Kumawat, Dr. R.K. Kakani, Dr. Hansraj, Dr. Kushwant, Dr. Sourabh Swami, and Dr. P. Santra.
Through its sustained research and outreach, CAZRI continues to demonstrate that even the most challenging environments can yield economic growth when science and tradition work together. The institute's innovations are not only improving farm incomes but also contributing to food security and sustainable development in one of India's most climate-vulnerable regions.
