BRS Plans Statewide Protests from Sept 2-8 Over Alleged Unfulfilled Guarantees

Hyderabad: The Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) has announced a week-long protest programme across Telangana from September 2 to 8, aimed at highlighting the Congress government's alleged failure to fulfil promises made during the 2023 Assembly elections. The party's working president, K.T. Rama Rao, issued instructions to party workers on Friday, outlining a series of demonstrations and rallies to be held across the state.

The protests will begin with the release of a 'chargesheet' on September 1, detailing what the BRS describes as the government's shortcomings. From September 2, the party will stage dharnas at Assembly constituency headquarters, focusing on the alleged non-implementation of six key guarantees promised by the Congress party. The BRS also plans to display large flex banners and 'debt-cards' to highlight the government's supposed 'dues' to households, in lieu of unfulfilled promises.

Each day of the protest week has been assigned specific themes. On September 3, the party will hold 'Rythu Sadassus' (farmer meetings) to discuss issues related to agriculture, irrigation water, 24x7 free power to agricultural pump-sets, urea supply, Rythu Bima, and the inclusion of farmers' lands under Section 22A of the prohibited list. The following day, September 4, will see special meetings with women and differently-abled persons, with a focus on the promised ₹2,500 per month assistance, the KCR Kit, and schemes like Kalyana Lakshmi and Shaadi Mubarak.

On September 5 and 6, rallies involving students and youth are planned, addressing issues such as fee reimbursement, the job calendar, the youth declaration, drinking water supply, and other rural concerns. The protests will culminate on September 7 and 8 with press meets at all district headquarters, summarising the alleged failures of the government.

The BRS, which is the principal opposition party in Telangana, has been critical of the Congress government led by Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy, which recently completed 1,000 days in office. Party leaders have repeatedly accused the government of reneging on its pre-election promises, including the six guarantees that were central to the Congress campaign. The upcoming protests are seen as an effort by the BRS to mobilise public opinion ahead of future elections.

Political observers note that the protest programme reflects the BRS's strategy to position itself as the primary challenger to the Congress government. The party has also sought to counter the government's narrative of development by focusing on unfulfilled commitments. The demonstrations are expected to draw significant participation from party workers and supporters across the state, with security arrangements anticipated at key locations.

While the BRS has framed the protests as a democratic expression of public grievances, the ruling Congress party has dismissed the allegations, stating that it is committed to implementing all promises in a phased manner. The Congress has accused the BRS of politicising issues for electoral gains. As the protest week approaches, tensions between the two parties are likely to escalate, with both sides gearing up for a political showdown in the coming days.
