BRICS Rehearsal: Delhi Traffic Diversions on Sept 1, Key Routes Affected
The Delhi Traffic Police has issued an advisory for commuters ahead of a full-scale motorcade rehearsal for the BRICS Summit 2026. The rehearsal will take place on September 1, 2026, between 11:00 AM and 3:00 PM, leading to route diversions and regulated traffic movement across several key corridors in New Delhi.
The advisory states that traffic movement will be regulated on designated high-security VVIP routes during these hours. Commuters have been urged to plan their journeys in advance, allow extra travel time, and use public transport, especially the Delhi Metro. The police have also asked drivers to follow diversion routes and instructions of traffic personnel deployed at key intersections.
Among the roads where traffic will be regulated are Sardar Patel Marg, Mother Teresa Crescent, Teen Murti Marg, Akbar Road, Tees January Marg, Rajesh Pilot Marg, Subramaniam Bharti Marg, Mathura Road, Moti Lal Nehru Marg, Dr. Zakir Hussain Marg, Brig. Hoshiyar Singh Marg, and Africa Avenue Road.
In addition, restrictions will be in place on Satya Marg, Shanti Path, Janpath, Ashoka Road, Barakhamba Road, Tolstoy Marg, Ranjeet Singh Flyover, Niti Marg, Panchsheel Marg, Kemal Attaturk Marg, APJ Abdul Kalam Road, Press Enclave Road, Lal Bahadur Shastri Marg, Josef Broz Tito Marg, and Lala Lajpat Rai Marg.
Bus routes may experience diversions during the motorcade movements. However, the Delhi Metro will operate normally across all stations without any disruption. Taxis and auto-rickshaws may also face temporary route changes. Roadside parking for these vehicles has been prohibited except in designated zones.
The advisory also specifies parking guidelines: no roadside parking is allowed within 200 metres of the controlled roads. Parking will be permitted only in authorised facilities. Drivers are expected to adhere to all traffic rules and directions from deployed personnel.
Emergency and essential service vehicles will be provided priority passage. Authorities have assured that medical and emergency vehicles will have obstruction-free movement at all times across Delhi. Vehicles operating essential services and utility supplies will have uninterrupted access across all zones.
Non-destined commercial vehicles are prohibited from entering Delhi during the specified period. Commuters travelling towards major transit hubs have been advised to include extra time in their travel plans.
In a post on X, Delhi Traffic Police said: "On September 1, 2026, from 11:00 AM to 3:00 PM, traffic diversions and regulated movement will be in place across key routes in New Delhi. Commuters are advised to plan their journeys in advance, allow extra travel time, use public transport—especially the Metro—and follow diversion routes and instructions of traffic personnel. Emergency and essential service vehicles will be provided priority passage."
The police have also requested citizens to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity or unidentified objects to the nearest police officer. Real-time traffic updates will be available on official Delhi Police social media platforms and traffic portals.
The rehearsal is part of security preparations for the BRICS Summit 2026. The advisory aims to minimise inconvenience to the public while ensuring the smooth and secure movement of VVIP convoys. Authorities have appealed to all commuters to cooperate with traffic personnel and adhere to the guidelines, which will help the rehearsals proceed without any untoward incident.
