BluSmart's Collapse Leaves Gap in Delhi's EV Cab Market, New Entrants Struggle to Fill Void
For months after ride-hailing service BluSmart suspended operations, many Delhi residents found themselves without a reliable electric cab option. Arjun Pratap Chauhan, a 24-year-old musician, recalls habitually opening the BluSmart app only to remember it no longer works. He says the service offered certainty: clean cars and few cancellations. Despite being willing to pay extra, he has not found a comparable alternative.
BluSmart halted operations in April 2025 after allegations of fund diversion involving a related party, Gensol Engineering. The shutdown left behind not only idle electric vehicles and displaced drivers, but also customers who had grown reliant on its reliability. Industry insiders note that no new entrant in the National Capital Region (NCR) has emerged as a clear successor.
Replacing BluSmart has proved difficult. Operational challenges include inconsistent charging infrastructure and the complexity of managing tightly controlled fleets. Executives and analysts point to a larger business problem: maintaining high service levels in NCR requires significant investment, and scaling sustainably remains difficult.
Some entrepreneurs see BluSmart's exit as an opportunity. Sahil Jindal, Managing Director of the DS Jindal group, had considered entering the EV cab business earlier but held back. After BluSmart's shutdown, he launched Trevel, an electric cab company. It currently operates 25 cabs in Gurgaon and plans to deploy 20,000 vehicles over five years.
Another major player is Refex Mobility, a Chennai-based fleet operator led by Anirudh Arun, former BluSmart chief executive. Refex operates roughly 2,000 cars across India, 1,600 of them electric. Rather than competing directly for consumer bookings, Refex focuses on transporting corporate employees along fixed routes. At a charging hub in Gurgaon's Sector 29, drivers like Kapil, a former BluSmart employee, report fewer rides than expected—two or three per day. The emphasis on scheduled commutes, however, aims to improve predictability, as a stranded electric taxi can disrupt operations.
Overall, BluSmart's departure has created a vacuum in Delhi's EV cab market. New entrants are attempting to fill it, but face hurdles in infrastructure, investment, and scaling. The experience of customers like Arjun suggests that replicating BluSmart's service model will take time and sustained effort.
