BJP to lay siege to Vidhana Soudha on Aug 24 over minister's resignation demand
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Karnataka has announced plans to lay siege to the Vidhana Soudha, the seat of the state legislature, on Monday, August 24, intensifying its demand for the resignation of Minister B. Nagendra. The minister has been chargesheeted in an alleged case of embezzlement of funds meant for Scheduled Tribe (ST) communities.
At a press conference in Bengaluru on Sunday, Leader of the Opposition in the Legislative Assembly R. Ashok said the party would take out a protest march from Freedom Park before laying siege to the Vidhana Soudha. All prominent leaders, including state president B.Y. Vijayendra, will participate in the protest, he added.
The BJP has been consistently raising the issue in the legislature, demanding Mr. Nagendra's resignation following the chargesheet. Mr. Ashok said the protests inside the legislature would continue. He also mentioned that Janata Dal (Secular) leader and Union Minister for Heavy Industries and Steel H.D. Kumaraswamy had expressed the view that the protest should continue during the session.
Mr. Ashok indicated that the opposition parties might also approach Governor Thaawar Chand Gehlot if the demand was not met. “As a last resort we will knock on the doors of the Lok Bhavan,” he said, referring to the Governor's residence. He said both parties would explore other options to take their protest to its logical conclusion.
In response, Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar accused the opposition of disrupting legislature proceedings and lacking the strength to face the Congress government. He described their tactics as “goondaism” and urged them to follow legal procedures for protests. “There is a provision to protest within the framework of the law. Today, they are resorting to goondaism. Without giving any notice, they are ruining the legislature proceedings through their protest,” he said.
The Chief Minister added that it was not wrong for the opposition to stage protests, but they should issue a notice and seek a debate on their demands. “The Opposition lacks the patience to discuss why the Minister should resign,” he said.
The political confrontation comes amid a charged atmosphere in the Karnataka legislature, with the ruling Congress and opposition BJP locked in a bitter standoff over the allegations against Mr. Nagendra. The minister, who holds a portfolio in the state government, has been accused of misappropriating funds intended for welfare programmes for Scheduled Tribes. The BJP has argued that his continuation in office is untenable in light of the chargesheet.
Meanwhile, the government has dismissed the opposition's allegations as politically motivated and accused the BJP of trying to stall the legislative process. The planned siege on Monday is expected to draw significant crowds, with both sides bracing for a high-voltage confrontation outside the Vidhana Soudha.
Authorities are likely to tighten security around the legislature complex to prevent any untoward incidents. The protest is expected to test the state government's ability to manage law and order while allowing peaceful demonstrations.
