BJP President Promises to Eradicate Drug Menace in Punjab at Yoga Day Event
Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) president Nitin Nabin on Sunday said the party would not allow the drug menace to hollow out Punjab and vowed to continue efforts to eradicate narcotics from the state. He was speaking after participating in the 12th International Yoga Day celebrations at Lovely Professional University (LPU) in Phagwara.
Addressing a gathering, Nabin said the issue of drugs should concern every Punjabi and called for collective action to free the state from the menace. “The BJP will not allow Punjab to be hollowed out. The poison of drugs must be eliminated at all costs. The name and trace of drugs should disappear from Punjab. Every Punjabi should be concerned about this issue,” he said.
The event was organised at the university campus, where thousands of participants performed yoga asanas. International Yoga Day, observed annually on June 21, was declared by the United Nations in 2014 following a proposal by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Nabin’s remarks come amid reports of increasing drug abuse in Punjab, a state that has been grappling with the problem for years. The BJP has often criticised the state government, led by the Aam Aadmi Party, for its handling of the drug crisis.
