BJP in Mysuru raises questions over B. Nagendra's reinduction into Cabinet
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Mysuru has formally questioned the reinduction of B. Nagendra into the Karnataka state cabinet, demanding a clear explanation from Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar and the Congress high command. The party has cited allegations against Mr. Nagendra concerning the alleged misappropriation of funds meant for the welfare of Scheduled Tribes.
Mr. Nagendra, who was earlier removed from the ministry after these allegations surfaced, has now been reinstated. At a press conference held in Mysuru on Wednesday, BJP city president L. Nagendra said, "The people of the state want to know whether the Congress was under pressure to induct him."
The press conference was attended by MLA T.S. Srivatsa, party spokesperson M. Mohan, district president Subbanna, and other party leaders.
The BJP also expressed surprise at the decision to induct Mr. Nagendra when several senior Congress MLAs have been denied cabinet berths. "Is it right on the part of the Chief Minister to make Mr. Nagendra a minister when senior party MLAs have been denied an opportunity? The Congress party must make known the reasons for his inclusion. Was the high command under pressure?" asked the BJP city president.
In addition, the party questioned the logic of earlier dropping Mr. Nagendra if he had done nothing wrong. "If he was innocent, why was he removed earlier? If not, why is he back?" the party leaders asked.
In a statement, the BJP announced that it would stage protests both inside and outside the legislature until Mr. Nagendra is removed from the cabinet. The Janata Dal (Secular) (JD(S)) has also indicated that it would join the protests.
"The Chief Minister must do justice to the Scheduled Tribes by seeking Mr. Nagendra's resignation. Otherwise, statewide protests will be held," the BJP warned in its statement.
This political confrontation comes at a time when the Congress-led government in Karnataka, headed by Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar, is already under scrutiny from the opposition on a range of issues. The allegations against Mr. Nagendra pertain to the alleged misuse of funds allocated for the welfare of Scheduled Tribes, an issue that holds significant social and political weight.
