BJP and Congress Clash Over Rahul Gandhi's Remarks on PM Modi's Foreign Policy
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Friday strongly criticised Congress leader Rahul Gandhi for his recent comments about Prime Minister Narendra Modi's foreign policy and his use of derogatory language. The ruling party accused Gandhi of lowering the dignity of his office as Leader of the Opposition and insulting the people of India.
Speaking at the Rachnatmak Congress National Convention on Thursday, Gandhi mocked PM Modi's diplomatic approach, suggesting it relied heavily on symbolic gestures such as embracing foreign leaders. He also referred to the BJP and the RSS as a 'bunch of jokers' who, in his view, lack understanding of India.
Union Education Minister Pralhad Joshi responded sharply, questioning Gandhi's maturity and dismissing his remarks as amateur dramatics. 'Running India requires mature leadership, not amateur dramatics,' Joshi said. He pointed out that PM Modi is an elected leader who did not rise through family lineage or dynastic politics, unlike Gandhi. 'The words being used, the level to which one is stooping, reflect sheer stupidity and frustration on Rahul Gandhi's part,' Joshi added.
Union Minister Giriraj Singh went further, suggesting that Rahul Gandhi appeared 'mentally frustrated' and advised his mother, Sonia Gandhi, to seek help for him. 'His conduct has crossed all limits of decency,' Singh said. He warned that if intervention does not happen, the situation could become serious.
BJP MP Bansuri Swaraj emphasised that Gandhi's language was contrary to the dignity expected of a constitutional position like that of the Leader of the Opposition. She called for a 'constructive opposition' rather than 'cheap rhetoric for social media memes and reels.'
Union Minister Sukanta Majumdar condemned the remarks as a 'new low in public discourse,' particularly references to Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni. He described the jokes as 'deeply disgraceful' and said Congress leaders laughing along were equally at fault.
The controversy began when Rahul Gandhi, during his speech, staged a hug with Congress leader Sandeep Dikshit to illustrate his claim about the Prime Minister's foreign policy. Dikshit then made a snide remark about Italian PM Meloni, with Gandhi playing along. The incident drew immediate reactions from BJP leaders, who accused Gandhi of disrespecting a foreign dignitary.
Congress has not yet issued an official response to the BJP's attacks. However, party spokespersons have in the past defended Rahul Gandhi's right to criticise the government and its policies. The exchange highlights the continuing friction between the ruling party and the opposition in the run-up to the next general elections.
Political analysts note that such verbal sparring is common in Indian politics, but the intensity and personal nature of the attacks reflect the deep polarisation in the current political climate. The use of terms like 'jokers' and 'mentally frustrated' by both sides has raised concerns about the declining standards of political discourse in the country.
This incident also comes at a time when PM Modi's foreign policy has been a subject of debate. Supporters credit him with elevating India's global standing through personal diplomacy, while critics argue that substantive issues often take a backseat to photo opportunities.
As the political war of words continues, the focus remains on how both parties navigate the fine line between robust criticism and personal attacks, particularly in the context of constitutional roles and responsibilities.
