Big investments in battery storage will lower electricity cost, says minister Joshi
New Delhi: The government is making substantial investments in battery storage systems as part of India's green energy transition, Union Minister for New and Renewable Energy Pralhad Joshi said on Tuesday. He added that this, combined with a strong push for wind and solar energy, will help reduce electricity costs in the coming years.
Speaking at the Adani Presents Times Network Sustainability Conclave 2026, Joshi stated, 'We are investing heavily in battery storage systems, with a strong focus on wind, solar and storage. Results will be seen soon, and it will lead to bringing down the cost of electricity.'
The minister also highlighted India's first hydrogen-powered train, noting that it places the country among a select group of nations investing in sustainable transportation technologies.
At the same event, Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav outlined the state's sustainability initiatives, including afforestation and water conservation projects. 'Across the world, serious discussions on the green economy, circular economy and climate change are shaping the future of development. I am confident that India will continue to play a global leadership role in these areas,' Yadav said.
Experts say that battery storage is critical for integrating variable renewable energy sources like solar and wind into the grid, as it allows excess power to be stored and used when generation is low. Lower storage costs could reduce overall electricity tariffs, making clean energy more affordable for consumers.
