Bhiwandi Food Poisoning Cases Climb to 122, Probe Underway

The number of individuals affected by a suspected food poisoning incident in Bhiwandi, Thane district, Maharashtra, has risen to 122, officials reported on Saturday (June 20, 2026).

Resident Deputy Collector Sandeep Mane confirmed that 107 patients are currently admitted to the government-run Indira Gandhi Memorial (IGM) Hospital in the locality, while 15 others are receiving treatment at other medical facilities.

According to police, several customers who consumed food items at a local establishment on June 17 began experiencing stomach pain and diarrhoea the following day, necessitating hospitalisation.

“The civic corporation is taking action against the establishment at its level,” Mane said.

Bhiwandi-Nizampur Municipal Corporation PRO Shrikant Pardeshi stated that the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has initiated action against the eatery. The civic body has also demolished an unauthorised portion of the establishment.

Former Bhiwandi MP Suresh Mhatre, who visited IGM Hospital, told reporters he would urge FDA Commissioner Tukaram Mundhe to take action against unauthorised food establishments in the area.

The affected individuals had consumed shawarma, pizza, and burgers from the shop. Police have launched an investigation into the incident, an official confirmed.
