Bengaluru STRR Project: Four Packages Complete, Two More on Track for 2026 Completion
The Bengaluru Satellite Town Ring Road (STRR) project, a key infrastructure initiative to decongest the city and connect surrounding industrial towns, has achieved significant progress. According to the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, four of the six packages in the 288-km project are now complete, with the remaining two expected to be finished by September and November 2026.
Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari provided the update in a written reply to an unstarred question by Rajya Sabha member Ajay Maken on Wednesday. The project, which spans 243 km in Karnataka and 45 km in Tamil Nadu, has a total capital cost of ₹14,655 crore.
Completed sections include the 42-km Dobbspet-Doddballapur Bypass on NH-648, which has achieved 100% physical progress, and the 38-km Doddballapur-Hoskote section on the same highway, with 99.2% progress. Additionally, a 7-km overlapping stretch integrated with the Bengaluru-Chennai Expressway is also complete.
Among the under-construction stretches, a 21-km greenfield highway from the Karnataka-Tamil Nadu border on NH-648 has reached 94.89% physical progress and is targeted for completion by November 2026. The 35.76-km Tamil Nadu portion on NH-948 has achieved 91.32% progress and is expected to be ready by September 2026.
The Ministry also confirmed that proposals for the next phase—constructing a six-lane STRR from Oblapura in Nelamangala taluk to Kunigal (Phase-I) and from Kunigal to S. Mudugadapallu in Hosur taluk—have been appraised by the Public Private Partnership Appraisal Committee (PPPAC), paving the way for further development.
The STRR project was launched in 2013 to connect industrial towns around Bengaluru, including Dobbspet, Doddballapur, Devanahalli, Sulibele, Hoskote, Anekal, Kanakapura, Ramanagara, and Magadi. It has faced delays due to various reasons, but progress is now accelerating.
In addition, the Ministry provided details of NHAI projects sanctioned in Karnataka over the last three years: six projects with a combined sanctioned cost of ₹6,917.37 crore, of which ₹1,744.58 crore has been expended. These include four packages of the STRR.
