Bengaluru Class 7 Student Attempts Suicide After Being Made to Stand Outside Class All Day
A 13-year-old student from a private school in west Bengaluru allegedly attempted suicide after being made to stand outside his classroom for the entire school day as punishment for a minor act of mischief. The incident took place on Tuesday under the jurisdiction of the Jnanabharathi Police Station.
The boy, a Dalit student admitted under the Right to Education (RTE) quota, was rushed to a hospital by his family and is currently undergoing treatment. Police officials said his condition is stable and he remains under medical observation.
According to a complaint filed by the boy's parents, the class teacher punished him by making him stand outside the classroom from morning until evening following a minor incident involving students. The parents alleged that the prolonged punishment caused severe emotional distress, leading to the suicide attempt after he returned home.
The father of the boy also claimed that the child had been complaining of harassment from school staff using casteist slurs. He had refused to attend school, and the parents had reportedly assured him that he would be transferred to another school upon completion of the term.
The family has sought legal action against the teacher. The Jnanabharathi police stated that a formal case has not yet been registered. “We will take action once a complaint is formally registered. As of now, the boy appears to be stable,” a police officer said.
