Bengal BJP Government Appoints Party Leaders to Head College Governing Bodies

The BJP-led government in West Bengal has appointed its legislators and members of Parliament as presidents of governing bodies of more than 200 government-aided colleges across the state, weeks after dissolving the previous bodies led by Trinamool Congress representatives.

A notification issued by the state Higher Education Department said presidents have been appointed for 247 state-run colleges. The appointments include Health Minister Sharadwat Mukherjee as president of the governing body of East Kolkata Girls College; Minister of State for Fire Services Kaushik Chowdhury heading the managing committee of Raiganj B.Ed College; Union Minister of State Sukanta Majumdar, MP from Balurghat, as president of Balurghat College; and Speaker of the West Bengal Assembly Rathindra Bose as president of Coochbehar College.

State Higher Education Minister Jagannath Chattopadhyay defended the appointments, saying there was nothing unusual about them. He noted that local MLAs and MPs are ex officio members of college management committees. "In that case, those who have a bachelor's degree have been made presidents. This government will not allow the educational field to become a playground for politics in any way," the minister said.

Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari, after assuming office in early May, had promised to make educational institutions free of politics. "We have cancelled the political nominations that were in various schools, colleges and universities with the aim of making educational institutions free from political influence. Because, making educational institutions free from politics and giving autonomy to universities — these should be our priorities," he had said.

Political observers, however, see the appointment of BJP leaders to these positions as a departure from the promise. The practice of having politicians at the helm of state-run colleges was prevalent during the Left Front regime and continued under the Trinamool Congress regime. Critics argue that replacing TMC leaders with BJP leaders does not end political influence but merely changes the party in control.

The government maintains that the appointments are based on qualifications and are intended to bring efficiency. Yet, the move raises questions about the autonomy of educational institutions and the fulfilment of electoral promises. As the new government completes its first months in office, the balance between administrative control and academic independence remains a key issue.

Educationists have also expressed mixed reactions. Some believe that having local representatives on governing bodies can help address institutional needs, while others worry that political appointments could compromise academic freedom. The long-term impact on the state's higher education landscape remains to be seen.
