Belagavi MLA seeks defence land transfer for IT park to boost employment
Belagavi South MLA Abhay Patil has appealed to the Union government to transfer unused defence land in Belagavi district to the Karnataka government for setting up an IT and semiconductor park. The request was made during a meeting with Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh in New Delhi recently.
Mr. Patil argued that the land, which he described as unutilised, could be put to productive use for the proposed technology park. He urged Mr. Singh to consider transferring the land to the State government to facilitate the project. As an alternative, he suggested that a defence manufacturing unit could be established on the site, which would generate direct employment for the youth of Belagavi. According to the MLA, the Defence Minister assured him that both proposals would be examined.
In a separate meeting, Mr. Patil met Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari to press for early approval of the Yellur Cable Car Project. He highlighted that the project would promote tourism in the region, attract more visitors, and create business opportunities and employment avenues, thereby boosting the local economy. Mr. Gadkari responded positively, according to a release from the MLA's office.
Belagavi, a district in northern Karnataka, is known for its significant defence establishments and growing industrial base. The proposed IT and semiconductor park is seen as a step towards diversifying the region's economic activities and providing skilled employment to the local population. Such parks typically require large tracts of land, and government-owned land is often considered suitable for this purpose due to clear titles and infrastructure availability.
