Bangladesh President Shahabuddin Resigns Citing Health Issues

President Mohammed Shahabuddin of Bangladesh resigned from his post on Friday, July 24, 2026, citing serious health problems. In a letter addressed to Hafiz Uddin Ahmed, Speaker of the National Assembly (Jatiyo Sansad), he stated that he was suffering from heart disease, hypertension, diabetes, and kidney complications, and was unable to perform the duties of the office.

Shahabuddin was sworn in as the twenty-second President of Bangladesh on April 24, 2023, during the third term of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. His tenure saw significant political turmoil, including a controversial general election in January 2024 that led to Hasina's re-election, and subsequent mass protests in July-August 2024 that culminated in the fall of her government on August 5, 2024. In his resignation letter, Shahabuddin defended his decisions that led to the formation of an interim government after Hasina's departure.

Reports indicate that the current government, led by Prime Minister Tarique Rahman who was sworn in on February 17, 2026, is planning to appoint Cabinet Secretary Nasimul Gani as the next President of Bangladesh. The resignation comes amid a period of political transition in the country.
