Ayyoub Bouaddi: Teen Prodigy Chooses Morocco, Shines Against Brazil

At 15, Ayyoub Bouaddi stood at the Élysée Palace, addressing an audience that included French first lady Brigitte Macron. The topic: "Is the result superior to the manner?" He won the national eloquence competition for football academies, demonstrating a maturity beyond his years.

Now 18, Bouaddi has taken that question to the football field. On Saturday, in a World Cup group match against Brazil, he provided his answer. Playing for Morocco, the midfielder controlled the tempo, completing passes and disrupting Brazil's rhythm. His performance forced veteran Casemiro into a booking and an early substitution.

Born in Creil, a town north of Paris, Bouaddi's journey to the World Cup was not straightforward. He captained France's under-21 side as recently as March 2026. But when Zinedine Zidane, widely expected to become France's senior coach after this tournament, spoke with him, Bouaddi made a decision. "I like you, but I can't promise you anything," Zidane reportedly said. Bouaddi appreciated the honesty and chose to represent Morocco, his father's homeland.

FIFA approved the switch on May 15, 2026. "The coach and the president told me immediately that choosing Morocco was the right decision," Bouaddi said. "They did not lie."

Bouaddi's upbringing blended discipline and intellect. His father, Hassan, a former deputy mayor of Creil, a banking executive, and a former handball player, emphasized both academic excellence and dignity. Bouaddi skipped a year in primary school, earned top marks in his baccalauréat scientifique at 16, and is now studying mathematics at the Université d'Aix-Marseille while playing Champions League football for Lille.

"A lot of people laugh when I say I'm still studying," Bouaddi said at a press conference. "When you study alongside everything else, it keeps your mind alert." He views mathematics not as a backup plan but as an intellectual necessity.

His football talent has been evident since childhood. Sofiane Khair, his first coach at AFC Creil, recalled: "Maturity, intelligence, calm, self-belief, courage. And always first at training. Then, after all of that, we mention talent." Those who have known him longest mention his personal qualities before his football skills.

On his 17th birthday, October 2, 2024, Bouaddi started for Lille against Real Madrid in the Champions League. He completed 43 of 44 passes, helping his team to a 1-0 victory. The crowd sang "Happy Birthday" at the final whistle.

Against Brazil, he again demonstrated his composure. By half-time, Casemiro had been substituted, unable to cope with Bouaddi's positioning and passing. The young Moroccan's performance was a testament to his preparation and poise.

Bouaddi's story is one of deliberate choices: to study, to play for Morocco, and to let his actions speak. As he continues his education and his football career, he serves as an example of how intellect and athleticism can coexist.
