Ayodhya Temple Donation Allegations: Political Fallout for BJP in Uttar Pradesh

Allegations of donation theft at the Ram Temple in Ayodhya have emerged, with potential political consequences for the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Uttar Pradesh. The scandal, involving claims of misappropriated funds, gold, and silver, has prompted resignations of key trust officials, including Shri Ram Janmbhoomi Teerth Kshetra Trust general secretary Champat Rai and trustee Anil Mishra.

Uttar Pradesh is a crucial state for BJP, having contributed significantly to its national victories in 2014 and 2019, and its decline in 2024. The state is expected to play a decisive role in the 2029 Lok Sabha elections and in shaping the post-Modi era. The Ram Temple movement was instrumental in BJP's rise, and any disillusionment among devotees could affect the party's electoral prospects.

Samajwadi Party (SP) chief Akhilesh Yadav has seized on the allegations, demanding the return of stolen offerings to devotees. Yadav has been expanding his outreach beyond his traditional base of backward classes, Dalits, and minorities, recently holding a Brahmin conclave. Brahmins, who constitute 9-10% of UP's population, have historically supported BJP but may be disenchanted due to the scandal and other factors such as the dominance of Rajputs in the Yogi Adityanath government and recent UGC norms favoring backward classes.

To reinforce his Hindu credentials, Yadav is building a Kedareshwar Mahadev Temple in Saifai, modeled on the Kedarnath shrine, and plans to visit the Ram Temple after its opening. The Congress party may ally with SP in this effort.

RSS leaders express concern that the allegations could cause 'moh bhang' (disillusionment) about Hindutva among the middle classes. Yogi Adityanath, the Chief Minister, faces high stakes as the scandal threatens to undermine the BJP's narrative of transparency and devotion.

The situation remains fluid, with all eyes on how the BJP and its allies manage the fallout. The allegations have not been proven in court, and investigations are ongoing.
