Assam Police Foil ‘Mass Casualty’ Attack Plot, Arrest Two ULFA-I Cadres
The Assam police on Saturday claimed to have averted a “mass casualty terror attack” after arresting two armed cadres of the United Liberation Front of Asom (Independent) in Tinsukia district.
The police identified the two men, arrested on Friday at Jagun in Tinsukia district, as self-styled ‘second lieutenants’ Humenjyoti Baruah (27) and Papu Moran (30), both natives of Tinsukia district.
Tinsukia Superintendent of Police Mayank Kumar said the two were arrested in an operation conducted by the police with the assistance of central agencies and security forces. In a preliminary investigation, police found that the two had been tasked by ULFA (I) to carry out indiscriminate firing and kill innocent civilians in Tinsukia town, aiming to create an atmosphere of fear in the region. The police also noted that the planned modus operandi indicated external influence, though details were not provided.
ULFA-I is a banned insurgent group operating in Assam, and has been involved in several attacks in the region over the past years. The SSP added that the two cadres had prior involvement in ULFA (I) attacks in the area.
The arrests come as security forces remain vigilant against insurgent activities in the state. Further investigation is underway to uncover the full extent of the plot and any other individuals involved.
