Assam Floods Toll Reaches 100; Over 1.37 Lakh Affected Across Seven Districts
The flood situation in Assam remained critical on Sunday, with two more fatalities pushing this year's death toll to 100, according to the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA). The latest victims, one each in Golaghat and Karbi Anglong districts, drowned in floodwaters over the previous 24 hours.
More than 1.37 lakh people are currently affected across seven districts: Charaideo, Darrang, Golaghat, Jorhat, Karbi Anglong, Nagaon, and Sivasagar. Golaghat remains the worst-hit district with nearly 70,000 affected, followed by Sivasagar (around 40,000) and Jorhat (over 16,000).
The situation has shown a slight improvement since Saturday, when nearly 1.5 lakh people were affected in eight districts. However, 456 villages remain inundated, and the floods have damaged 11,933.46 hectares of cropland, according to the ASDMA bulletin.
The administration is running 125 relief camps and distribution centres across six districts, where 49,061 affected people are currently taking shelter. In the last 24 hours, authorities distributed 710.44 quintals of rice, 127.85 quintals of dal, 38.34 quintals of salt, and 3,773.7 litres of mustard oil among the affected population.
Floodwaters have also damaged embankments, roads, bridges, and other critical infrastructure in several districts. The Dhansiri river at Golaghat and Numaligarh, and the Kushiyara at Sribhumi, are flowing above the danger level, the ASDMA said, signalling continued risk for downstream communities.
The deluge has also affected 43,331 domestic animals and poultry across the state, compounding the economic distress for rural families already reeling from crop losses. Livelihoods dependent on agriculture and animal husbandry have been severely disrupted.
Assam, which experiences floods almost every year during the monsoon, has faced particularly severe inundation this season. The recurring crisis underscores the need for long-term measures, including improved embankments, better flood forecasting, and sustainable river management, to mitigate the impact on vulnerable communities.
Officials said relief and rescue operations are ongoing, with teams deployed to the affected areas to ensure the delivery of essential supplies and medical aid. The ASDMA has advised residents in flood-prone areas to remain vigilant and follow safety protocols as rivers continue to flow above danger levels in some regions.
The state government has appealed to all agencies to coordinate effectively to prevent further loss of life and to support affected families in the recovery process. As the monsoon continues, authorities remain on alert for any further deterioration in the situation.
