Assam Floods: 6.43 Lakh Affected, 41 Dead, Central Team to Visit
Assam's flood situation remained critical on Thursday, July 23, 2026, with over 6.43 lakh people affected across 10 districts. Incessant rains have worsened the crisis as several major rivers flow above the danger mark, according to an official report from the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA).
Union Home Minister Amit Shah telephoned Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma to inquire about the situation and informed him that an inter-ministerial Central team will visit the state within a day or two to assess the damage. The floods have claimed at least 41 lives, and Chief Minister Sarma expressed concern that 70 to 80 more people are missing, potentially raising the death toll.
The affected districts include Charaideo, Dibrugarh, Golaghat, Hojai, Jorhat, Kamrup, Kamrup Metro, Karbi Anglong, Nagaon, and Sivasagar. A total of 35 revenue circles and 889 villages have been impacted. As of Thursday, 99 relief camps are operational, sheltering 24,596 people. Crop area spanning 24,891.66 hectares remains submerged.
Rivers flowing above the danger level include Buridihing at Khowang (Dibrugarh), Dikhou at Sivasagar, Disang at Nganglamuraghat (Sivasagar), Dhansiri at Numaligarh (Golaghat), and Kushiyara at Sribhumi. The release of water from NEEPCO's Doyang hydel power project in Nagaland, due to rising water levels, has prompted Assam's government machinery to brace for a further rise in flood levels.
Multiple agencies, including the Army, Air Force, National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), and State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), continue rescue and relief operations, evacuating stranded people and distributing essential supplies in waterlogged areas.
Chief Minister Sarma, who toured the worst-hit eastern districts, said that Home Minister Shah assured him of central assistance. In a post on X, Sarma expressed gratitude for the call and stated that the Central team will help determine the required aid for rebuilding livelihoods. He noted that flash floods triggered by a cloudburst upstream have caused havoc, with croplands destroyed, important documents lost, and poultry washed away.
In the state Assembly, the flood devastation was raised for the second consecutive day. Raijor Dal MLA Akhil Gogoi was suspended for the day after he climbed onto his desk to protest the Speaker's rejection of his adjournment motion seeking a discussion on the floods.
The government continues to work on providing relief and assessing the full extent of the disaster.
