Appointment of Chief Minister's Film Producer as Tamil Nadu's Delhi Envoy Raises Conflict of Interest Questions
The appointment of K Venkata Narayana, chairman of the KVN Group and producer of Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay's unreleased film 'Jana Nayagan', as Tamil Nadu's Special Representative in New Delhi has sparked debate over potential conflict of interest. The government order, issued on Friday by Chief Secretary M Sai Kumar, creates a temporary post for one year with cabinet rank, tasked with coordinating between the state and Union governments.
Narayana, a Bengaluru-based businessman, has no prior political experience. His close association with Vijay, who heads the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) party, has drawn criticism from opposition parties. DMK Rajya Sabha member P Wilson argued the appointment 'belittles' the post's stature, traditionally held by experienced politicians. BJP Tamil Nadu president Nainar Nagendran questioned how a person with ties to Karnataka could effectively represent Tamil Nadu's interests, calling it 'a great betrayal'. AIADMK and AMMK also raised concerns about governance and loyalty.
Inside the ruling TVK, the decision is defended as an expression of gratitude. A senior TVK leader, speaking on condition of anonymity, said Narayana stood by Vijay during a difficult period surrounding the film's production and that his business experience is an asset. The appointment follows a pattern of Vijay appointing personal associates to key positions, including his former manager as Private Secretary (Political) and an astrologer briefly as Officer on Special Duty (Political), though the latter was withdrawn after controversy.
The Special Representative role involves coordinating meetings with Union ministers, following up on infrastructure projects, central funding, and parliamentary matters. While states usually assign senior IAS officers for administrative functions, Tamil Nadu has historically reserved this politically sensitive role for politicians. The government order states that terms and conditions of Narayana's appointment will be notified separately.
