Anurag Jain Appointed as New CEO of NITI Aayog

The Union government has appointed Anurag Jain, a 1993-batch Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer of the Madhya Pradesh cadre, as the new Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of NITI Aayog, the premier policy think tank of India. He will succeed B.V.R. Subrahmanyam, who is retiring from service.

Jain brings extensive administrative experience, having served in various capacities at both the state and central levels. Prior to this appointment, he was Additional Secretary in the Ministry of Home Affairs, where he handled crucial portfolios. His expertise in public policy and governance is expected to guide NITI Aayog's role in shaping India's development agenda.

The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet approved Jain's appointment, which is effective from the date he assumes charge. The term of appointment is coterminous with the government's tenure or until further orders, whichever is earlier. NITI Aayog, which replaced the Planning Commission in 2015, focuses on fostering cooperative federalism and promoting sustainable development goals.

As CEO, Jain will oversee the day-to-day functioning of the institution and coordinate with various ministries and state governments. He will also work on flagship initiatives such as the Aspirational Districts Programme and the development of India's long-term strategic plans. His tenure comes at a critical time when the country is focusing on economic recovery and post-pandemic reforms.

The appointment is seen as a strategic move to bring experienced bureaucracy to the think tank, which advises the government on key policy matters. Jain's background in handling security and administrative affairs is expected to add value to the institution's work on internal security and governance reforms.
