Andhra Pradesh Power Demand Hits 280 Million Units Daily as Temperatures Soar
Power consumption in Andhra Pradesh has surged to approximately 280 Million Units (MUs) per day, driven by a sharp rise in temperatures over the past few weeks, Energy Minister Gottipati Ravi Kumar announced.
Despite the onset of the monsoon, the minister noted that weather conditions have been erratic, with temperatures steadily climbing and leading to increased demand for electricity. The government has taken steps to maintain an uninterrupted power supply, with utility staff promptly attending to disruptions. Coordination among local public representatives, district officials, and power utility staff has helped minimise inconvenience to consumers.
Mr. Ravi reiterated the government's commitment to not increasing electricity tariffs for five years, highlighting the implementation of a true-down mechanism. He added that the transmission network is being strengthened through upgrades to AP-Transco's infrastructure and expedited construction of new substations and transformers across the state.
In light of the state's industrial growth, the minister said the government is expanding electricity infrastructure to meet the requirements of upcoming industries. Power sector projects worth approximately ₹6,000 crore are at various stages of implementation.
Mr. Ravi further stated that the government has not increased electricity tariffs during the past two years and is entering its third year without a revision. He alleged that the power sector was weakened during the previous YSR Congress Party rule, and the current coalition government has restored it.
