Amid internal crisis, TMC's Assam unit reaffirms loyalty to Mamata Banerjee
The Assam unit of the Trinamool Congress (TMC) has publicly declared its support for party leader Mamata Banerjee amid ongoing internal turmoil. Sherman Ali Ahmed, the party's only MLA in Assam, convened a meeting of party workers and leaders on Friday, where a resolution was passed stating that 'the Assam unit will be with Mamata Banerjee'.
This development comes shortly after a major upheaval in the party's West Bengal unit. On June 3, all TMC committees in Assam, along with those in West Bengal, were dissolved following a shock defection. Fifty-nine of the party's 80 elected MLAs in West Bengal had defied Banerjee and backed expelled MLA Ritabrata Banerjee as the Leader of the Opposition in the state assembly.
In response, TMC National Joint Secretary Derek O'Brien tasked Sherman Ali Ahmed with overseeing the party's affairs in Assam until the unit is reconstituted. Ahmed's leadership of the Assam unit appears to have solidified loyalty to Banerjee in the state, at least for now.
The resolution from the Assam unit is a small but significant show of support for Banerjee as she navigates the challenges within her party. The TMC has faced internal dissent and power struggles in recent weeks, raising questions about its cohesion ahead of future electoral contests.
