Allahabad High Court Seeks Government Response on PIL to Restrict Minors' Access to Roblox
The Allahabad High Court has sought a response from the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology and other relevant authorities regarding a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) that calls for a ban on minors' access to the online gaming platform Roblox and similar platforms. The PIL raises concerns about children's psychological well-being, online safety, and exposure to harmful content.
A division bench comprising Justices Rajan Roy and Manjive Shukla was hearing the petition filed by Rani Sing, a practising lawyer, against the Union of India, the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology, and other concerned respondents.
The petition highlights the risks posed by Roblox and similar online gaming platforms to children. It argues that these platforms may expose minors to inappropriate content, online predators, and addictive gameplay, which can harm their mental health and development. The plea also requests the formation of an expert committee to assess these risks and recommend protective measures.
The court has directed the authorities to file their responses and scheduled the next hearing for a later date. The outcome of this case could have significant implications for the regulation of online gaming platforms in India, particularly concerning child safety.
