Alan Greenspan, Former US Federal Reserve Chairman Who Shaped Global Economy, Dies at 100

Alan Greenspan, the former chairman of the United States Federal Reserve who oversaw a period of economic expansion and became a symbol of central banking authority, died on Thursday at the age of 100. His death was confirmed by a family spokesperson, though the cause was not immediately disclosed.

Greenspan served as the Fed's chairman from 1987 to 2006, a tenure that spanned four presidencies and saw the end of the Cold War, the dot-com boom, and the aftermath of the September 11 attacks. He was widely credited with steering the US economy through periods of turbulence, including the 1987 stock market crash and the Asian financial crisis of 1997-98.

Born in New York City on March 6, 1926, Greenspan studied economics at New York University, where he was influenced by free-market thinkers. He later worked as an economic consultant and served on the board of JP Morgan before being appointed to the White House Council of Economic Advisers under President Gerald Ford. President Ronald Reagan nominated him as Fed chairman in 1987.

Greenspan's tenure was marked by a philosophy of deregulation and a belief that financial markets could self-regulate. He was an advocate for low inflation and flexible labour markets. Under his leadership, the Fed adopted a more transparent approach to monetary policy, though critics argue that his policies contributed to the housing bubble and the 2008 financial crisis.

After retiring from the Fed, Greenspan remained active in public discourse, writing books and advising governments. He was known for his nuanced statements that often required careful interpretation, leading to the phrase 'Greenspeak'.

His legacy is complex: while praised for fostering economic growth and stability in the 1990s, he has been criticised for failing to regulate derivatives and for his role in the expansion of subprime lending. Nonetheless, his influence on global monetary policy remains profound.

Greenspan is survived by his wife, Andrea Mitchell, an NBC News journalist, and two children from a previous marriage.
