AI Traffic Cameras Nab 4,868 Violations in Kanniyakumari; System Expanded to 10 More Locations

Kanniyakumari district police have expanded their AI-based traffic violation detection system, known as 'Kaaval AI,' to ten additional locations across the district. The expansion, announced on Wednesday, is part of the 'Zero accident Kumari' initiative aimed at improving road safety.

The system, which uses artificial intelligence cameras to monitor traffic violations in real time, was first launched at the district collectorate roundabout last month. At that location, AI cameras installed at four approaches instantly display the registration numbers of offending vehicles on a digital screen, and penalties are automatically generated based on the nature of the violation.

Since its initial deployment, the system has detected 4,868 traffic violations and imposed corresponding penalties. Police officials report that the initiative has been well received by the public and has led to a noticeable increase in helmet usage among motorcyclists.

During the launch event in Vadasery, Kanniyakumari District Superintendent of Police R. Stalin stated that the primary objective of 'Kaaval AI' is to promote helmet use as a behavioural change. He noted that approximately 350 people die in road accidents in Kanniyakumari district each year, and 75% of these fatalities are due to the lack of helmet usage.

The AI cameras with digital boards have now been installed at Vadasery, APPTA market, Parvathipuram, Chettikulam, Anjugramam, Vivekanandapuram, Karungal, Azhagiymandapam, Thiruthuvapuram, and Thuckalay. In the third phase, cameras will be placed at locations with high accident rates, Mr. Stalin added.

At the event, Mr. Stalin also distributed certificates to students and other contributors in recognition of their role in the successful implementation of the project.
