Ahmedabad deluge: 294.6 mm rainfall in 24 hours, fourth highest on record
Ahmedabad received 294.6 mm of rainfall in the 24 hours ending 8 am on Friday (July 24), marking the fourth highest single-day rainfall in the city's recorded history, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD).
The all-time record remains the 414.8 mm recorded in July 1927. The latest downpour has caused waterlogging in several areas, disrupting traffic and daily life.
IMD Ahmedabad region director A K Das confirmed: “Ahmedabad recorded its fourth highest rainfall on Thursday-Friday. The highest rainfall record was in 1927, somewhere around July 20.”
The South West and North West zones among the city's seven municipal zones received the highest rainfall. The Bopal area recorded the highest precipitation at 467.5 mm, followed by Bakrol with 462.5 mm.
Das attributed the heavy rainfall to five weather systems that became active over Gujarat simultaneously, leading to intense precipitation over the region.
Meanwhile, Surat city also experienced continuous rainfall since Wednesday night, causing waterlogging, traffic disruptions, and road closures.
