AgriGold victims: Naidu orders expedited compensation, warns against delay tactics

Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu on Thursday directed officials to move swiftly to ensure early justice for depositors of the AgriGold scam, while cautioning against any attempts to stall relief measures through legal proceedings. Reviewing the matter with Ministers after the Cabinet meeting, Mr. Naidu said the government would adopt a firm approach against those obstructing compensation efforts by approaching courts.

The AgriGold scam, one of the largest chit-fund frauds in the state, involved thousands of depositors who were promised high returns but lost their life savings. The Chief Minister's directive comes amid prolonged legal battles and procedural delays that have kept victims waiting for restitution. To hasten the process, Mr. Naidu instructed officials to speed up the auction of properties seized from the accused, so that the proceeds could be distributed to the affected families at the earliest.

In addition to the scam-related measures, the Chief Minister reviewed other administrative matters. He directed Ministers to organise Independence Day celebrations in alignment with the Centre's Viksit Bharat 2047 vision, while also reflecting the objectives of the state's own Swarna Andhra Vision-2047. This dual focus, officials said, would ensure that the celebrations highlight both national development goals and the state's specific aspirations.

Mr. Naidu also emphasised the need to make effective use of floodwaters arriving from upstream regions to address drinking water shortages across Andhra Pradesh. He instructed the officials concerned to prepare a plan for capturing and utilising this water, and to ensure an adequate supply of fodder for livestock in areas affected by dry conditions.

On the legislative front, Mr. Naidu announced that the State Assembly would convene for a four-day session from August 17 to 20. The session is expected to take up pending legislative business and allow the government to outline its priorities, including relief for AgriGold victims and other public welfare measures.

Observers note that the Chief Minister's emphasis on expediting compensation is a politically significant move, given the scale of the scam and the widespread distress it caused. The state government has faced criticism in the past over the slow pace of recovery and distribution of funds. By linking the auction process directly to compensation, the administration aims to demonstrate accountability and responsiveness to the victims' grievances.

Legal experts point out that while the government's resolve is clear, the actual timeline for disbursal depends on the completion of court-mandated procedures and the successful auction of assets. Officials, however, expressed confidence that the fresh directives would remove bottlenecks and ensure that relief reaches the victims without further delay.

The decision to synchronise Independence Day celebrations with the Viksit Bharat vision and Swarna Andhra Vision-2047 also reflects the government's attempt to project a forward-looking agenda. The state's long-term development plan is expected to focus on infrastructure, industrial growth, and social welfare, aligning with the Centre's goal of making India a developed nation by 2047.

Meanwhile, the management of floodwaters has been a recurring challenge for Andhra Pradesh, particularly in the delta regions. The Chief Minister's instruction to treat upstream flows as a resource rather than a hazard marks a proactive approach to water conservation, especially in view of recurring summer shortages. Officials have been asked to coordinate with neighbouring states and central agencies for timely data on river flows.

As the state prepares for the upcoming Assembly session, all eyes will be on the government's legislative agenda and the concrete steps it announces for AgriGold victims. The Chief Minister's clear message to officials and litigants alike is that justice cannot be postponed.
