After 40 Years: PM Modi's New Zealand Visit Targets Stronger Trade and Defence Links

Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in Auckland on Friday for the first visit by an Indian Prime Minister to New Zealand in four decades. The visit aims to build on the comprehensive free trade agreement (FTA) signed earlier this year, enhance defence and security cooperation, and address issues related to talent mobility and education.

During the visit, both countries are expected to announce initiatives for collaboration in high-performance sports, building upon a sports cooperation Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed previously. This move aligns with India's bid to host the Olympic Games in 2036. New Zealand Prime Minister Christopher Luxon has indicated support for India's Olympic bid, similar to his Australian counterpart Anthony Albanese.

In the defence sector, India and New Zealand are working to finalise a roadmap for bilateral defence industry collaboration. This includes ramping up joint exercises, training, and port visits. Both sides view defence and security cooperation as essential for ensuring the safety and security of sea lanes of communication and favour regular dialogue for enhancing maritime safety.

Mobility of skilled workers and students is a significant focus, especially under the newly signed FTA. India has emphasized the need to reduce hassles faced by high-skilled Indian professionals, which can act as de facto non-tariff barriers. Announcements regarding easier student visas, academic collaborations, and professional mobility are expected during the visit. Both leaders will also discuss early implementation of the FTA.

Additionally, India is encouraging more opportunities for Indian students seeking quality education in New Zealand, while both sides work to facilitate the mobility of professionals and skilled workers and address issues of irregular migration. The two prime ministers will reaffirm their commitment to an open, inclusive, stable and prosperous Indo-Pacific, with respect for sovereignty and territorial integrity.

PM Modi, upon arrival, described the visit as historic and expressed eagerness to discuss the full range of India-New Zealand friendship. He is also scheduled to address a community programme in Auckland.
