Adimaly Mudslide: Kerala Govt Sanctions ₹10 Lakh Each to 14 More Families
The Kerala government has sanctioned ₹10 lakh each as compensation for 14 more families affected by the Adimaly mudslide in Idukki district. With this, the total number of beneficiary families has risen to 23, according to official sources.
An order issued by the Idukki District Collector said the district administration had initially recommended 18 families for compensation. However, a subsequent inspection revealed that four of these families owned land under the jurisdiction of the Mannamkandam village office, leading to their exclusion from the beneficiary list.
The devastating mudslide occurred at Koompanpara along the Kochi–Dhanushkodi National Highway on the night of October 25, 2025. It claimed the life of Biju, a resident of Laksham Veedu Colony, and severely injured his wife, Sandhya. On October 28, 2025, doctors had to amputate Sandhya’s left leg due to the severity of her injuries.
Following the disaster, the Revenue department identified 27 families residing in the area under imminent threat of further mudslides. Officials reported that nine houses were completely destroyed, while others remained at severe risk. Authorities relocated these families to rented accommodations as a precautionary measure.
A senior revenue official said the government had earlier allotted ₹10 lakh each to the nine families whose houses were completely destroyed. Meanwhile, 18 other affected families had been staging protests in Adimaly over the past month demanding relief. Following a high-level inspection, the department cleared aid for 14 more families, bringing the total to 23 and excluding four.
During a review meeting held at the Idukki Collectorate in the last week of July, Revenue Minister K. Rajan promised that compensation would be disbursed to the affected families before Onam. The latest disbursement is seen as a fulfilment of that assurance, though four families remain outside the compensation list.
The mudslide has highlighted the vulnerability of settlements along the national highway in the hilly terrain of Idukki. The district administration has been carrying out awareness campaigns and monitoring the area to prevent further tragedies. Relief and rehabilitation efforts continue, with the government stating that all families facing immediate threat have been moved to safer locations.
