Actor Tannaz Irani Opens Up About Hip Replacement Surgery After Years of Pain

Actor Tannaz Irani recently spoke about her health struggles on the game show 'Tum Ho Naa', hosted by Rajeev Khandelwal. She described experiencing severe pain in her left hip and leg, which she initially attributed to yoga or weight gain. Despite undergoing MRIs, CT scans, and bone density tests over two years, she could not find a definitive diagnosis. Her condition worsened, leading to limping and eventual reliance on a wheelchair. Eventually, she underwent a full hip replacement.

Dr Rakesh Nair, consultant knee replacement surgeon at Zen Multispeciality Hospital in Chembur, explained that such severe hip pain typically results from long-standing issues like osteoarthritis, avascular necrosis, rheumatoid arthritis, or trauma. He noted that when cartilage wears down, bone rubs against bone, causing persistent pain, stiffness, and difficulty walking. Total hip replacement becomes necessary when other treatments no longer provide relief.

During the surgery, the damaged ball and socket of the hip joint are replaced with prosthetic components made of metal, ceramic, or plastic. Recovery is generally positive, with most patients walking with support within 24-48 hours and regaining independent movement within 6-8 weeks with physiotherapy. Dr Nair emphasised the importance of early diagnosis and not ignoring chronic hip or leg pain.
