Aaditya Thackeray Accuses Defecting MPs of 'Selling Loyalty' Amid Shiv Sena Rebellion
Mumbai: Aaditya Thackeray, leader of the Shiv Sena faction led by former Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray, on Monday accused Members of Parliament who have switched sides of putting their loyalty up for sale. His remarks came as the party continues to face a fresh wave of defections, threatening its political standing in Maharashtra.
Speaking to reporters, Aaditya Thackeray said, 'Your loyalty is for sale. These greedy MPs have no regard for the mandate given by the people. They are betraying the trust of their constituents for personal gain.' He did not name any specific lawmakers but referred to recent reports of several Shiv Sena MPs preparing to join the rival faction led by Chief Minister Eknath Shinde.
The rebellion marks the latest chapter in the ongoing rift within the Shiv Sena, which began in June 2022 when Shinde led a split, taking a majority of MLAs with him and eventually forming a government with the Bharatiya Janata Party. Since then, the Uddhav faction has struggled to retain its legislative strength.
Political analysts note that defections have become a recurring feature in Indian politics, often undermining democratic stability. The practice of switching parties, particularly after elections, raises questions about the integrity of elected representatives and the electoral process. The Constitution does not explicitly prohibit party switching, but the Anti-Defection Law (Tenth Schedule) allows for disqualification if a member voluntarily gives up party membership or votes against the party whip.
The Shiv Sena (Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray) has been trying to consolidate its base ahead of upcoming state assembly elections. However, the recent exodus of MPs has weakened its position. Aaditya Thackeray called on party workers to remain united and not be swayed by 'offers of power and money.'
As of now, no formal statement has been issued by the Shinde camp regarding the allegations. The Election Commission has not yet been approached for adjudication on any defections. The situation continues to evolve, with both factions holding internal meetings to assess their numerical strength.
