80th Independence Day: Leaders honour freedom fighters, stress unity and constitutional values
New Delhi: As India marked its 80th Independence Day, leaders across the political spectrum extended greetings to citizens and paid tributes to the freedom fighters whose sacrifices shaped the nation. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, and Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi were among those who addressed the nation through messages and social media posts.
In his address, Prime Minister Modi recalled the dreams of the freedom fighters and said their vision continues to inspire the country’s journey. He emphasised that India is moving forward with the collective strength of 140 crore citizens. “The dreams of our freedom fighters continue to inspire us. Their sacrifices and vision guide our path towards a developed nation,” Modi said. He called upon citizens to work together for the progress of the country, reiterating the government’s goal of a self-reliant and prosperous India.
Home Minister Amit Shah also greeted the nation on the occasion. In a message posted on social media, Shah paid homage to the freedom fighters and said that their courage and dedication laid the foundation of independent India. He urged citizens to uphold the values of unity and patriotism, and to contribute towards building a strong and secure nation.
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, in his message, highlighted the importance of remembering the sacrifices made during the freedom struggle. He said that the nation’s progress is a tribute to those who fought for independence, and called on every citizen to remain committed to the duty of protecting the country’s sovereignty and integrity.
Congress leader Mallikarjun Kharge, who also serves as the Leader of the Opposition in the Rajya Sabha, extended Independence Day wishes but struck a note of caution. In his message, Kharge expressed concern over what he described as challenges to constitutional values and democratic institutions. He said that the idea of India, as envisioned by the Constitution, must be preserved and strengthened. “On this Independence Day, we must reflect on the state of our democracy and renew our commitment to the principles of justice, liberty, equality, and fraternity,” Kharge said.
The occasion also saw messages from other political leaders, including Chief Ministers of various states, who urged citizens to uphold the spirit of unity in diversity. Across the country, flag hoisting ceremonies and cultural programmes were held to mark the day, with many paying tribute to the freedom fighters through floral offerings and remembrance events.
The 80th Independence Day comes at a time when India is observing significant national milestones and continues to focus on economic growth, technological advancement, and social welfare.
