8 workers killed in quarry collapse near Bengaluru, rescue underway
At least eight workers died after a massive rock collapse at a stone quarry on the outskirts of Bengaluru, officials confirmed on Thursday.
The incident occurred in the early hours of the morning when a large section of the quarry wall gave way, trapping several labourers under debris. Rescue teams from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and local authorities rushed to the site and have been conducting search operations throughout the day.
Among the deceased were daily-wage labourers who had migrated from Bihar, according to local police. Their bodies have been recovered and sent for post-mortem. The injured have been admitted to nearby hospitals.
Initial reports suggest possible safety violations and negligence at the quarry. Authorities have launched an investigation to determine the cause of the collapse and to fix responsibility. The quarry operator has been questioned.
Karnataka's Revenue Minister, who visited the site, announced an ex-gratia payment of Rs 5 lakh to the families of each deceased worker. He also assured strict action against those found guilty.
The incident highlights the precarious working conditions faced by migrant labourers in unorganised sectors such as mining and quarrying. Safety norms are often flouted, leading to such tragedies.
