28 Indian Seafarers Safe After Vessel Attacked in Iranian Waters: Embassy
New Delhi, July 24: A Mozambique-flagged LPG tanker carrying 28 Indian crew members came under attack in Iranian territorial waters on Friday, the Indian Embassy in Iran has confirmed. The vessel, named DISHA, was targeted amid ongoing tensions in West Asia, but all Indian nationals on board are reported safe.
In a statement posted on social media platform X, the Indian Embassy said, 'The Embassy has been in close contact with the relevant authorities and has confirmed that all Indian crew members are safe.' The embassy added that it continues to monitor the situation and remains in touch with concerned authorities.
The attack on DISHA is the latest in a series of incidents involving commercial vessels with Indian seafarers in the region. On July 14, an Indian national was killed and 10 others injured, two seriously, in Iranian attacks on two oil tankers in the Strait of Hormuz. India strongly condemned those attacks on the vessels MT Al Bahiyah and MT Mombasa, which together carried 30 Indian crew members.
According to official figures, 14 Indians have died in the West Asia conflict since the escalation began with the U.S.-Israel attack on Iran on February 28. The conflict has seen a rise in maritime attacks, affecting merchant shipping and endangering civilian seafarers.
Earlier this month, an Iranian attack on the Cyprus-flagged container ship GFS Galaxy left an Indian crew member missing. In another incident last month, three Indian seafarers were killed in a U.S. attack off the coast of Oman on the commercial tanker Settebello, which had 24 Indian crew on board.
The Indian government has urged all Indian seafarers and shipping companies to exercise caution while navigating in the region. The safety of Indian nationals remains a priority, and authorities are working to ensure their protection and timely communication with families.
