17 Delhi Metro Stations Closed Third Day Amid Security Alert Over Protest
For the third consecutive day on Friday, 17 metro stations in central Delhi remained closed due to security concerns, linked to an ongoing protest near Jantar Mantar. The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) issued a statement confirming that the stations—Lok Kalyan Marg, Rajiv Chowk, Patel Chowk, Ramakrishna Ashram Marg, Barakhamba Road, Supreme Court, Seva Teerth, Janpath, Mandi House, Central Secretariat, ITO, Delhi Gate, Indraprastha, Khan Market, Jor Bagh, Shivaji Stadium and Jhandewalan—will be shut from 7:30 am until further instructions.
DMRC clarified that interchange facilities at Rajiv Chowk, Mandi House and Central Secretariat stations would continue to operate, allowing passengers to change lines. The same stations were also closed on Wednesday and Thursday.
The prolonged closure has caused significant inconvenience to office-goers, students and other commuters who rely on the metro for daily travel. On Wednesday, the Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) filed a plea in the Supreme Court, arguing that the closure of several metro stations had made it difficult for lawyers and litigants to reach the court premises. The matter is pending before the court.
The security measures are in response to the protest, which has drawn large crowds to the area. Authorities have not provided a specific timeline for the reopening of the stations, advising commuters to plan their journeys accordingly.
