12-Year-Old Tigress Found Dead in Srisailam Tiger Reserve; No Poaching Suspected
A tigress, approximately 12 years old, was found dead in the Gundla Brahmeswaram (GBM) range of the Nagarjunasagar Srisailam Tiger Reserve (NSTR) in Andhra Pradesh. Field staff discovered the carcass on July 12.
In accordance with the Standard Operating Procedure of the National Tiger Conservation Authority (NTCA), a post-mortem was conducted on July 13 by a committee comprising deputy director of Project Tiger, Nandyal, the forest range officer of Gundla Brahmeswaram, forest veterinary officers, representatives of the NTCA, a forest section officer, and a forest beat officer.
According to Mr. Udaideep, an official involved in the inspection, all body parts including canines and claws were found intact. “We found no signs of poaching or removal of body parts. Biological samples were collected and sent for detailed laboratory examination as per protocol,” he said.
Preliminary findings suggest that the tigress may have died due to old age. After completing all statutory formalities and sample collection, the carcass was disposed of following NTCA guidelines.
