12 Indians Killed in Qatar Factory Explosion; Jaishankar Offers Condolences
NEW DELHI: External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar expressed sorrow on Tuesday after 12 Indian nationals were killed in an explosion at a factory in Qatar's Ras Laffan Industrial City. The incident also left several others injured.
In a statement posted on social media platform X, Jaishankar said: "Deeply saddened by the loss of lives and injuries, including of Indian nationals, in the explosion at Qatar’s Ras Laffan Industrial City. As further details emerge, our Embassy continues to be in touch with Qatari authorities, and is reaching out to render assistance to the families of Indian nationals affected by this tragedy. Our thoughts and prayers are with the victims and their families."
The Indian embassy in Qatar confirmed the deaths and provided an update on the injured: "Qatari authorities have confirmed that 12 Indian nationals have unfortunately passed away in the Ras Laffan incident yesterday night. We extend our deepest condolences to the bereaved families and prayers for the departed souls. Qatari authorities have also confirmed that all those who got injured in the incident are in stable condition and are receiving appropriate medical treatment."
The embassy added that it is working closely with Qatari authorities to facilitate all possible assistance to the affected Indian nationals and their families, including ensuring the earliest repatriation of the mortal remains to India.
According to Qatari authorities, the explosion was caused by a technical malfunction during operations at a factory in Ras Laffan Industrial City, leading to a fire. QatarEnergy later clarified that the incident occurred during the start-up of operations at the Barzan local gas supply facility.
There have been no further details on the cause of the malfunction or the identities of the deceased. The Indian government continues to monitor the situation and provide support to the families of the victims.
