Youth Congress Leader Wins Election from Jail Amid Extortion Case
Azad Singh, a Youth Congress leader who is currently lodged in jail on extortion charges, has been elected vice-president of the organisation from the Baba Bakala Assembly segment in Amritsar district. The result, published on the Youth Congress official website, shows Singh secured 3,053 votes out of 4,812 polled, defeating his rival Sukhpreet Singh Sukh Randhawa, who received 1,596 votes.
The election outcome has placed the Youth Congress in an uncomfortable position, raising questions about its internal election process. Singh has been in judicial custody since his arrest in February this year by the Amritsar Rural Police in connection with an alleged extortion case involving a demand of Rs 30 lakh from a property dealer.
Under the party's constitution, any member facing criminal charges is not automatically disqualified from contesting internal elections. However, the situation highlights a potential contradiction between the party's public stance on law and order and its internal democratic practices.
A resident of Butari village, Singh's victory from behind bars has sparked debate among party workers and political observers. While some argue that the election process should be suspended for those facing serious criminal charges, others contend that the principle of 'innocent until proven guilty' must be upheld.
As of now, the Youth Congress has not issued an official statement on the matter. The party's leadership is reportedly reviewing the case to determine if any disciplinary action is warranted.
