World Bank, GVMC deliberate on Visakhapatnam Economic Region's urban roadmap

A delegation from the World Bank met with Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation (GVMC) Commissioner Ketan Garg at the corporation’s headquarters on Thursday to discuss strategies for the development of the Visakhapatnam Economic Region (VER). The meeting focused on preparing a roadmap for long-term urban infrastructure projects in the region.

The World Bank team, comprising representatives Jones, Abhijit Roy, and Jyoti Nayak, held detailed deliberations with the Commissioner on the city’s evolving infrastructure needs. The discussions come amid rapid population growth and an expanding industrial and economic landscape in North Coastal Andhra, which have increased the demand for planned urban development.

Mr. Garg underscored the need to formulate comprehensive development plans that cater to the city’s growing population while supporting its industrial and economic expansion. He stressed the importance of building robust civic infrastructure and implementing mega-projects that directly benefit residents and meet the future requirements of an urban centre poised for significant economic growth.

The meeting also explored potential areas of collaboration between the World Bank and GVMC, including technical assistance, funding models, and efficient management of financial resources. These measures are intended to accelerate Visakhapatnam’s transition into a prominent economic region, the officials said.

Further details on the specific projects or timelines were not disclosed. The dialogue marks a continued engagement between international financial institutions and local civic bodies in planning sustainable urban development in the region.
