Woman dies after surgery at Ramanathapuram hospital; relatives protest second day
Relatives and villagers from Palkarai staged a road blockade for the second day on Thursday, demanding action against doctors at the Ramanathapuram Government Medical College hospital over the death of a 35-year-old woman.
The woman, M. Tamilselvi, was admitted for a nasal polyp surgery on May 21. During the procedure, her condition suddenly worsened and she was moved to the intensive care unit in a critical state. She was treated there but died on Tuesday night.
Her relatives refused to accept the body, alleging that medical negligence caused her death. They demonstrated on the hospital premises on Wednesday demanding action against the responsible doctors and compensation.
Ramanathapuram Collector M. Sivaguru Prabhakaran held talks with the protesters on Wednesday, but they remained unsatisfied. On Thursday, the relatives again blocked the road in front of the hospital. Police persuaded them to end the blockade, but the protesters insisted on their demands.
The relatives also sought a government job for Tamilselvi's husband. The Collector assured them that their demands would be conveyed to the State Government. However, the relatives said they would not accept the body until their demands were met.
