Wildfires in France and Spain Force Over 250,000 to Evacuate
Firefighters in south-west France are battling to control wildfires that have forced mass evacuations, with strong winds pushing flames towards the city of Bordeaux. A local official stated that the fires are “far from having the fire under control.”
More than 250,000 people in France and Spain have fled fires that have been raging for days. High temperatures and persistent winds have hampered efforts to contain the blazes. Overnight, seven towns west of Bordeaux were ordered to evacuate residents.
In Spain, a state of emergency has been declared, but a change in weather conditions has offered some relief to firefighters near Madrid. Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez acknowledged “complex times ahead.” Authorities in València confirmed the death of a man, believed to be in his 70s, whose body was found in his car after a fire in the Salt de l'Aigua ravine in Manises.
In France, approximately 200,000 people have been evacuated from the Gironde and Landes regions. The French military has been mobilised to support the response, with army reinforcements clearing brush and creating fire breaks to assist firefighters.
The situation remains critical as authorities continue to monitor weather patterns and deploy resources to protect lives and property.
