West Bengal school headmaster shot dead in Uttar Dinajpur; police probe on
Nazrul Islam, a school headmaster, was shot dead by unidentified motorcycle-borne men in West Bengal's Uttar Dinajpur district on Saturday (August 8, 2026). The incident occurred near the Madaripur area of Islampur while he was on his way to work in the morning.
The victim was immediately rushed to the Islampur Sub-Divisional Hospital and later shifted to a government medical facility in Siliguri. He succumbed to his injuries in the afternoon.
Islampur police have launched an investigation and are scanning CCTV footage from the area to identify the attackers. No arrests have been made so far, and police have not yet established any specific motive behind the murder.
Local police officials visited the site to recover evidence. A senior police official said, “We visited the deceased man’s house. We have found a few leads; we are working on it. We will share more details after we are further ahead in our investigation.”
Ruksana Khatun, the victim’s wife, told media that her husband did not have any feud with anyone. “About 10 minutes after he left I got a call from an unknown number who told me that someone has shot my husband. I could not believe them. Even my husband spoke on the call and told me that he was shot,” she said.
Leader of Opposition in the West Bengal Assembly, Ritabrata Banerjee, called the incident serious and demanded a thorough investigation. “All the people responsible must be punished,” he said.
Senior Congress leader Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury commented on the incident, saying that such violence is not new in West Bengal. “Guns and bullets are being used everywhere in Bengal. Bombs, pistols, guns, bullets, loot; this is what Bengal has become. We have not been able to redeem Bengal from this image,” he said.
The killing has left the local community in shock. Authorities have urged the public to come forward with any information that could help in identifying the culprits. Further details are awaited as the investigation progresses.
