Wayanad Debris Slide: CM Satheesan Reviews Rescue Efforts on Ground

Chief Minister V.D. Satheesan on Wednesday, July 8, visited the disaster-stricken locations at Kalladi, near Meppadi in Wayanad district, and personally evaluated the ongoing rescue operations to streamline immediate relief and rehabilitation measures. The debris slide, which occurred near the Meenakshi bridge, has resulted in several individuals reported missing and many families displaced.

Accompanied by Revenue Minister A.P. Anil Kumar and Agriculture Minister T. Siddique, the Chief Minister arrived at the accident site. During his visit, he extensively reviewed the progress of the rescue operations currently underway to track individuals reported missing after the calamity.

Mr. Satheesan held detailed discussions with the personnel engaged in the search and rescue operations to gain a first-hand understanding of the severe logistical challenges posed by the difficult terrain, which remains heavily inundated by rainwater.

Later, the Chief Minister visited a relief camp functioning nearly two kilometres away from the disaster zone. During his short interaction with the displaced persons accommodated in the camp, he enquired about their immediate requirements and health conditions. The camp provides temporary shelter and basic amenities to the affected families.

On completion of his visit to the camp, Mr. Satheesan proceeded to the Wayanad Institute of Medical Sciences (WIMS) to meet the survivors who were rescued and admitted to the private healthcare facility on Tuesday. He held a high-level discussion with the attending doctors regarding the medical condition of those critically injured and assessed the requirement for advanced medical intervention.

The Chief Minister’s visit, originally scheduled for 3.30 p.m., was delayed by over an hour due to adverse weather conditions prevailing in the region. According to Revenue Department officials, he had been kept updated on the ground realities well in advance of his arrival.

Officials also pointed out that the presence of the Chief Minister along with two senior state ministers underscored the gravity of the situation, paving the way for speedier administrative sanctions and accelerated rescue operations. At the final review meeting held at the Wayanad Collectorate in the evening, all major public concerns were discussed for speedy action. The state government has assured all necessary resources to support the affected communities and continues to coordinate with local authorities.
