War Takes Toll: 16 Indians Dead, 75 Hurt in Middle East, Parliament Told
NEW DELHI: Sixteen Indian nationals, including 10 seafarers, have lost their lives in the ongoing Middle East conflict since its outbreak earlier this year, the government informed Parliament on Tuesday. Additionally, 75 Indians have been injured in the region, according to a written reply submitted in the Rajya Sabha.
Minister of State for External Affairs Kirti Vardhan Singh provided the breakdown of fatalities: eight in Oman, four in the United Arab Emirates, two in Kuwait, and one each in Iran and Saudi Arabia. The deaths were a result of the conflict, which has involved attacks on shipping and other targets.
In a separate incident unrelated to the conflict, 12 Indian nationals died in an accident at the Ras Laffan Gas Facility in Qatar. The minister clarified that this incident was not linked to the hostilities.
The government, in coordination with host governments, has extended all possible assistance to the families of the deceased, including early repatriation of mortal remains. Injured Indians received medical treatment in local hospitals, and Indian embassies and consulates coordinated with local authorities for regular updates on their health and provided necessary assistance.
The government continues to monitor the situation and remains committed to the safety and welfare of Indian nationals abroad.
