V.O.C. Port becomes first Indian port to get ISO 50001 energy management certification
In a significant development for India's maritime sector, the V.O. Chidambaranar Port Authority in Thoothukudi has become the first port in the country to be accredited with the ISO 50001:2018 certification for energy management systems. This certification underscores the port's commitment to energy efficiency and sustainable operations.
ISO 50001:2018 is a global standard that sets requirements for establishing, implementing, maintaining and improving an energy management system. The standard helps organisations systematically track and reduce energy consumption. For the V.O.C. Port, the certification covers all major energy-consuming areas, including cargo-handling equipment, lighting systems, buildings, HVAC systems, pumps, workshops and maintenance facilities. It also encompasses energy monitoring and metering, preventive maintenance, operational controls, renewable energy systems such as solar and wind power, electric vehicles and charging infrastructure, and shore-to-ship power systems. The framework ensures continuous monitoring and improvement of energy performance across all port facilities.
This achievement adds to the port's long history of adopting internationally recognised standards. In 1996, it became the first major Indian port to receive the Quality Management System (QMS) certification under ISO 9001. Later, in 2005, it became the second port in the country to obtain the Environmental Management System (EMS) certification under ISO 14001. Both certifications have been successfully retained over the years, demonstrating the port's consistent adherence to high operational and environmental standards.
Speaking about the latest recognition, Susanta Kumar Purohit, Chairperson of V.O.C. Port Authority, described it as a landmark achievement. "This certification reflects the port's unwavering commitment to responsible energy management and sustainable development," he said. He also noted that the port is keen to lead by example in the maritime industry's transition to greener practices.
Ports are among the largest energy consumers in the logistics chain. By implementing a structured energy management system, the V.O.C. Port aims to reduce energy waste, lower operational costs, and minimise its carbon footprint. The integration of renewable energy sources and shore-to-ship power systems is particularly notable, as it enables ships docked at the port to use clean electricity instead of running their engines, thereby reducing emissions in the harbour area.
The achievement also aligns with India's broader national goals. The country has committed to reducing the carbon intensity of its economy and increasing the share of non-fossil fuel sources. The adoption of ISO 50001 by a major port is a step in this direction, and it may encourage other ports to follow suit. The Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways has been promoting energy efficiency and sustainability in the maritime sector, and this certification is a concrete example of those efforts taking shape.
As the first Indian port to earn this certification, the V.O.C. Port has set a benchmark for others. The systematic approach to energy management not only benefits the port's own operations but also contributes to the larger goal of sustainable infrastructure in India.
